OUR STYLE OF MARTIAL ARTS
At the Folsom Karate Academy, we teach a variety of different martial arts styles formed into one system of martial arts. In our style of martial arts, we have taken many aspects of different martial arts styles and molded them into a single style, utilizing the most effective concepts of each style to form a single powerful tool for learning self defense. This is similar to the philosophy Bruce Lee took in the development of his style "Jet Kun do." Below are some of the styles of martial arts you will be learning.
Kickboxing Kickboxing is currently a very popular full contact sport. Kickboxing training is a very effective way to lose weight, build muscle, build endurance, and develop speed. Kickboxing incorporates modern boxing techniques and work outs with powerful kicking techniques.
Jujitsu Jujitsu is a Japanese/brazilian style of martial arts that is very closely related to judo and wrestling. Jujitsu is characterized by its very effective choking, pressure point, and joint manipulation techniques often executed while on the ground in a wrestling situation. Jujitsu is also becoming an increasingly popular sport. 80% of all combative encounters end up on the ground where jujitsu skills are most effective.
MMA (Modern or Mixed Martial Arts) MMA is currently a sporting rage. Competitors can be seen on televison almost weekly. It is Characterized by mixing specific techniques from jijitsu, kickboxing, Mui Thai Fighting, and other disceplines for the purposes of sport combat. MMA is an increaible tool to help develop a martial artists fighiting skills, strength, endurance, and fighting mentality.
Kenpo Karate Kenpo Karate meaning " the law of the fist" is an eclectic style of martial arts developed in Hawaii by the late Grand Master Ed Parker. Its purpose was to create a very involved system of self defense techniques that would enable a practitioner to be ready for any kind of attack. Direct and "to the point" Kenpo Karate techniques are designed for street self defense.
Tae Kwon Do Literally meaning "The Way Of The Hand and Foot," Tae Kwon Do was developed in Korea and has become an Olympic sport. It is characterized by its powerful direct kicking and punching techniques. Because legs are longer and stronger than arms, Tae Kwon Do kicking techniques become powerful weapons when used in self defense. In additon, Tae Kwon Do katas (routines) are great for traditional forms competition.
Kung-fu Kung-fu was created early in Chinese history as a way of fending off barbarian attacks. Buddist monks are credited with its invention. Kung-fu is a very circular and evasive martial art. It utilizes many soft quick movements and strikes that are designed to avoid and disable the power of an attacker. The Folsom Karate Academy's use of Kung-fu is derived from the disciplines of White Tiger Kung-fu, Wing Chun, and White Eyebrow. In addition, Chinese Wu Shu and Tai Chi classes are available but are seperate from our normal program.
